Most articles about the oil tanker/icebreaker saga somehow neglect to mention the record-breaking cold in Nome. If they even allude to it, they bring it up almost as an afterthought at the very end of the article.

Take this article on MSNBC, which doesn’t mention the record-breaking cold until the next to last sentence:

“(Nome Mayor Denise Michels) said the weather has been extremely cold this winter. The temperature in Nome dipped to 34 degrees Fahrenheit below zero Friday, breaking the record set for that day in 1973.”

So much for an ice-free Northwester Passage.

    They tied the daily record on January 3,5,10 and 12, and broke it on 4 and 13.
