At least fifteen people have died this week as a severe cold wave hits southern India

The intensity of the cold has surprised residents as deaths due to cold are unheard of in the southern state, the Times of India reported. Adilabad district recorded a temperature of just 4.2C (39.56 F), the lowest in more than 100 years.

According to weather officials, upper air circulation over the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and cold winds from the Himalayas brought the temperature down drastically.

One Response to Southern India coldest in more than 100 years

The same is true for Sri Lanka, which is more to the South, just above the equator. Although not deadly, the winter made records in the central highlands around Nuwara Eliya at 1800m above MSL, lowering morning temperatures to 3.8C. Shallow open waters freezed while hills were covered in white, with dust-like ground frost. Even the lowlands enjoyed lower temperatures, with early mornings being around 19C. These lows are not unusual once in a while, during this time of the year but this year the lows showed up each morning, continuously.
