Death toll now well over 200.

Despite a decrease in gas deliveries in Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece and Italy, an EU official denies there’s an emergency.

But Italy’s economic development minister describes the situation in the country – where some 60,000 households are without power – as “critical”.

In parts of Italy, temperatures dropped to their lowest levels in years, to -10C in Milan. And heavy snow closed Rome’s Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

A total of 17 people have died since the plunging temperatures began in Italy, eight dead on Sunday alone.

“We are expecting another cold wave in Russia and we don’t know how Gazprom will behave on Thursday and Friday,”  said Italian power supplier ENI chief Paolo Scaroni.

Death count are always underestimated to avoid panicking the sheep can we get some proper death counts. Please.

  2. John the 1st says:

Just a minor point of order; you have an older story that says the death toll is 300.

  3. Actually, back on the 5th, 300 deaths in Europe were being reported, noted on this site in fact.. typo maybe?

Interesting how a cold snap is immediately used to political ends. The Russians need ice-free ports and Syria is currently on good terms with them. The US and UN are looking at sanctioning Syria and Iran. Gazprom provides about a quarter of Europes gas and it can easily afford to restrict sales if asked to by the Russian Govt. It will not be long before the wheels of politics turn and the EU nations have a word with the US and UN and sanctions will be put on hold/forgotten. Russians will use Syrian ports with or without a change of Syrian regieme.
The powers that rule are not too worried about the odd elderly death due to cold but it does provide a public front for politicing on the world stage.

Cold times always accompany difficulty and political upheaval.
    Just my personal take.
