With temperatures plunging as low as minus 40C (minus 40F), the grim winter toll rose across Europe.

In Serbia, authorities declared states of emergency in 32 municipalities. Almost 70,000 people remained cut off in snowed-in Serbian villages

10 Responses to Europe – Deep freeze death toll passes 300

As Europe freezes, Boston’s winter has been the mildest in years. Hardly any snow either. Couldn’t be better if I was making the weather myself!

  2. Joe Bastardi says:

One has to look at the big picture, The global temp trace since the flip of the PDO has been jagged but starting down after leveling off

As far the warmth in Massachusetts, you will find that the next 2 months ( starting Wednesday) you will have winter, and perhaps in droves before a late spring sets in. The cooling in europe is a sign the pattern will break in the US. Similar occurrences in the mid 80s as the Reagan Inauguration outbreak and the Challenger disaster. To be clear, the cold in Europe does not come here, but the pattern that produces the cold is a sign of changes that should turn eastern N America cold

Do you think the Southeast will have any snow, when this pattern flips? I live in middle Georgia,it was 76 degrees on sunday, however today was a far cry from 76 here at the house it was only was 53 degrees! it was predicted to get up to 62-68 ,never happened!Im beginning to wonder if the 10 day forcast is going to be wrong, and get colder! If it does get real cold there are going to be some damaged plants flowers and tree buds that have already sprouted!this happened in 2007 it was hard freeze in April, everything was “brown” far as you could see!it took a Month for the plants and trees to grow back in May in north ga!

Although JB would be the ultimate expert on this, I would say anything is possible after mid February, providing that the pattern is expected to flip. However, there ware certain analog years you can check against this pattern and see if a solution can be found. I don’t have the details, but in past years we had mild winters, such as 97/98 and then in March a blizzard took shape in Nebraska. (Omaha dropped to the lowest level -13 F that winter in early March 98 with a foot of snow)

The SE also turned very cold as the same arctic air mass over the central Plains began building south and East into the SE states, resulting in a trace of snow down to Charleston,SC and a low of 20 F – the lowest of the winter. So yes, that could happen again. The only difference this time around is that that winter we had a strong El-Nino, then La-Nina took shape in March. But temps were mild that winter, just like this year.
2007 could be a better analog as we also experienced a mild winter thru Feb – then a cold April 2007 in many parts of the nation with a hard freeze into the SE. I remember it dropping off to 28 F here in Chas early April 2007. Only problem I have with prospect for snow in the SE is that we still have La-Nina pattern thru March, which means less southern stream energy (sub-tropical jet is usually absent with La-Nina) so precip potential could still be a problem unless we can phase the northern and southern stream for the development of a major storm system (shortwave) across the south and eastern US. There are many variables involved that have to come together.

Any prognostications for the west coast say around the San Fran area?
I am thinking about starting the spring planting early its so warm.

    • kenneth lund says:

Great post and thank you JB !

  3. kenneth lund says:

That proves again that it is definitely getting colder and snowier in most locations as the ice age cycle continues to progress. Those who do not believe that need to go back to grade school and learn how to count to three. The mild weather in the USA this winter is irrelevant due to La-Nina and no blocking upstream.

It’s bitter cold with record snowfall on the other side of the world. These articles speak for themselves. Some people on here have NO clue how weather works. They are simply “dumbed down” by the mainstream media.

  4. Gail says:

I don’t see people trapped in their homes or dying on the streets here in Massachusetts because it has been unseasonably warm.

  5. Some UK Newspapers are reporting that the cold is due to the ice melting and the cold and warm areas are just moving around.
My son says it snowed for four hours at his work (trying to get the photos and will attach later). It was the sixth time it has snowed in the South Island of New Zealand in the middle of summer!
We have just had a record cool January in the North Island.
So much for it moving around the cooling appears to cover a good section of the globe.

    • Brad says:

It is true,, 75% of the globe is cooler than normal! the only exception was the lower 48 until today! it has become about 25 degrees cooler today, compared to Sunday!76 degrees then, 53 degrees today! I think we will have record cool and cold in the northern hemispere this spring and summer as well in the lower 48!
