Killer freeze grips Europe – Death toll rises to 160

Tens of thousands seek help in temporary shelters.

The death toll rose to 160 Thursday as countries from Italy to Ukraine struggled to cope with temperatures that plunged to record lows in some places.

Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Austria, Serbia, Bosnia, Czech Republic, Greece and Slovakia have all suffered cold-related casualties.

Tens of thousands – Tens of thousands! – of Ukrainians have sought help in the more than 2,000 temporary shelters trying to escape the freeze that has now killed 63 people in that country alone.

Most of them literally froze to death on the street, with only a handful making it to hospital before succumbing to hypothermia, the ministry said.

Temperatures fell to minus 33C in the west and minus 27 in the capital Kiev.

In some parts of Romania temperatures reached minus 31C.

In Bulgaria, 16 towns recorded their lowest temperatures since records began 100 years ago, and large sections of the Danube were frozen. Authorities moved some vessels to ports further away to protect them from the advancing ice.

In Italy, hundreds of people were trapped overnight on trains as freezing temperatures and heavy snowfalls caused widespread chaos on roads, railways and at airports. Forecasters say it’s the coldest in Italy in 27 years.

In Bosnia, several remote hamlets in the east of the country are cut off, while in France, 28 of 101 regions were placed under “deep cold” watch where the risk of snowfall and ice remained high.

Media for the masses is actually reporting about this cold event in this political “correct” Sweden. One warm-monger in Sweden stands out above all others. Martin Hedberg of Klart.se would make even Al Gore himself to blush if he heard that mans climate-fantasy! Sweden is unique through the fact that swedes actually think about our government as a loving father.
