“Elderly people cannot afford to keep homes heated properly.”

More than three thousand people died in the week between 13 and 19 February, 90 percent of them aged 65 years or more, the third consecutive week of abnormally high mortality.

The flu epidemic and low temperatures are likely causes, but the health minister revealed that the authorities are investigating the cause of this mortality peak.

According to the Daily News, citing data provided by Instituto Nacional Ricardo Jorge, the death toll was much higher than normal for this time of year.

In Portugal, the average number of deaths associated with influenza is around two thousand, but this was almost double.

Throughout Europe, the increased  number of deaths from the flu, pneumonia, hypothermia and cardiac complications have ruptured many pre-hospital services and led to a  lack of inpatient beds.

Data from the World Health Organisation show that in Portugal 44 per cent of families with elderly people cannot afford to keep homes heated properly.

Meanwhile, in the United States, President Obama is doing everything in his power to drive up the cost of coal.

27 Responses to Portugal – 3,000 deaths in one week from flu & cold

Last Monday, 2/27/12, the geoengineering was very bad over Washington DC/northern Virginia. When I went outside I started having respiratory difficulties and got a metallic taste in my mouth. I started taking remedies to counteract the effects. My 15 year old daughter refused the remedies and woke up the next day barely able to talk with congestion. She got full blown flu symptoms a few days later. I fought it for a week with extreme exhaustion. I think a lot of the widespread symptoms are from what is being sprayed in the atmosphere, for whatever reason: weather modification, protection from solar flares, military radar applications, or just plain old genocide. Who knows? But when you see the geoengineering trails and start feeling symptoms, take precautions.

Re the flu, both my husband and I live in the Algarve, very close to the sea and are suffering from a flu like illness. I am on my second dose of it since the New Year. The symptoms are very flu like, nasty cough, runny nose, headache, backache, loss of appetite and exhaustion. We both noticed that we had rashes or bites on our stomachs and backs. I read in The Sunday Times yesterday that because of global warming and warmer winters viruses transported by midges which used to affect animals in southern Europe in places like Spain, Portugal and Italy are now affecting animals in the UK and northern Europe. I am wondering whether this virus is now affecting humans and whether Portugal’s unusually high mortality rate over the last month could be related to this. This is not normal flu! ps I just spoke to a friend who lives close by who said he had the same symptomns last month.

You need only to go to 8.13 and read from there to see why this whole thing is so dangerous.
    Whose laws? By what measure?

“8.13. Laws and regulations suited to country-specific conditions are among the most important instruments for transforming environment and development policies into action, not only through “command and control” methods, but also as a normative framework for economic planning and market instruments. Yet, although the volume of legal texts in this field is steadily increasing, much of the law-making in many countries seems to be ad hoc and piecemeal, or has not been endowed with the necessary institutional machinery and authority for enforcement and timely adjustment.”

NOTE the Command and control, central authority…

    Hi there Robert ,

As you may remember I live in rural Central Portugal , and yet this is the first I have heard of this story,
it `has` been very very cold a lot longer and harsher than normal. and still no rain !! in fact we are getting forest fires like we do at the beginning of and end of summer around 140 a day.

    Thanks

    Steve

I wonder if this is a precursur to a shift in the Gulfstream?

      • Rosco says:

Everyone in Europe ought to be praying not.

As evidence of the importance of the Gulf Stream there are palm trees growing in the village of Plockton in the Scottish highlands -near the Isle of Skye.

Palm trees in Scotland ? – more than 55 degrees north – I have seen them myself. Without the Gulf Stream this would not be possible and Scotland would become a very difficult place to live – if not inhabitable.

      • C. Peter Davis says:

Research has already proven that the Gulf Stream has slowed by at LEAST half in just the past few years.

        • Fran says:

“the past few years” coincide with the low solar cycle we’re experiencing now, but what could be the connection?
We *know* that the arctic glaciers are *not* melting away as GW says…
          Undersea volcanoes, possibly?
Increased volcanic activity *is* closely connected with low solar cycles, maybe there is a connection there.

      • Fran says:

what would be the cause of the shift?

People, families, governments were taken unawares this year. It happens. It has happened before and will continue to happen. With all the fevered conspiracy theories out there I wonder does serendipity even exist? Does bad luck or miscalculation play any part in some folks philosophies? Sometimes a rose is just a rose, and sometimes a natural disaster is just that, a natural disaster. No conspiracy required, no hidden agenda. Most folks on here seem to believe that idividuals are responsible for themselves and their families. Okay than, take care of yourself and your family.
That sound you hear? That’s the universe laughing as you make plans.

    • ShariShark says:

I agree, it can’t all be “someone’s out to get us” – sometimes it is just bad weather and “natural” disasters. It is important to be prepared to handle yourself and your family no matter what comes, flood, fire, drought, or cold. Food, water, shelter and warmth are necessary. Weather is what it wants to be, whatever we believe about it and sometimes it is not what we want or expect. There would not be such an uproar if we weren’t always being blamed for the bad weather – CO2 does not cause any of it. Mother nature does and she can be quite a “mother”!

    • Laurel says:

and that IS what a lot of us here are saying. IF? you take the advice of authorities to NOT keep stocks of emergency food water and fuel stored,( in usa now that makes you a probable terrorist FFS!)you do risk becoming a casualty in natural events. ALL of the weather events ARE natural, happened before will happen again and warmist claptrap isnt helping anything but certain peoples incomes, ie the goracle and hansen, and banksters. and eurocrats.
those who will survive the snows and maybe the following floods ARE the ones with personal initiative who do not rely on “someone” coming to their aid.
the agenda 21 rules and regs ARE going to create inertia, stymie initiative via so much compliance that people wont be bothered due to the paperwork fees and difficulty. want to build a shed? pay applications and follow unsuitable regs for whats really required in your personal area. ie if I build here I have to have gutters, if however I expect snow the gutters will be a downside and tear roof/eaves as they give out. but the regs dont count on anything but certain events. to go outside of them is trouble. its not a good look.

        Hi Robert-
I live in Florida on the I-4 corridor and a lot of people have been suffering from various infections. I’ve been sick with a sinus infection/inner ear infection since January. I’ve finally gotten over it along with my mom, dad and oldest brother. A friend of mine told me last night that all over the country, people are getting sick. What’s causing this? Robert, have you heard anything?

    • C. Peter Davis says:

As I have named, been writing, blogging and posting for years; “Weird World Weather continues…”

Is this the real reason behind the almost religious fervor of anthropogenic global warming zealots???

  9. jim b says:

so the green agenda is working well in portugal, the rest of the world needs to catch up quick in case gaia gets impatient

  10. TomO says:

Now, this is precisely what AGW is all about. Driving the cost of heat up to eliminate the useless people that add no productive value to the world of the ultra rich. We can see what preparing for a warmer environment does for you while the environment is going in the opposite direction. Sad, but true.
