“Arctic ice extent is the highest in nearly a decade, and has again set the record for both the latest peak and the longest winter,” says this article on RealScience.com.

Normally, the ice would have been melting for almost a month already.

“After reading the article from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSICD), ” says reader Chris Vella, “I find it amusing that they admit the ice extent is increasing, multi-year ice is increasing, start of the spring melting is happening later, and yet they cannot explain why? (even though they do their best to try to convince you that that the ice in reality is still decreasing.)

“I am no rocket scientist,” says Vella, “but it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain to know that this could only be caused by COOLING conditions. I hope for mankind’s sake that this trend doesn’t continue!

“Lets see how the media will either totally ignore this story, or somehow blame global WARMING for the increased ice.”

Although it must have pained them to admit it, according to the NSICD, “ice cover remained extensive in the Bering Sea, where it has been above average all winter. “

“Ice extent was also higher than average in Baffin Bay, between Greenland and Canada, and the Sea of Okhotsk, north of Russia.”

“Air temperatures were 6 to 8 degrees Celsius (11 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit) below average over the Bering Sea, Baffin Bay, and parts of the Sea of Okhotsk.”

“Overall, the Arctic gained 140,000 square kilometers (54,000 square miles) of ice during March. Typically, March has been a month of net ice loss (an average of 260,000 square kilometers [100,000 square miles] for 1979 to 2000), but the last three Marches have had net ice growth.”

Thanks to Kirk Myers, Chris Vella and Marc Morano for these links

“Yeah, the arctic ice cap is in real danger of melting,” says Kirk.

Can’t wait for the new season of the Deadliest Catch. We will able to see how bad the ice is up in Bering Sea. I thought that Al Gore and his buddies said the ASrtic Ice was melting.

No surprise here. Wonder if the networks will report it? Not really. We know they won’t.

  4. Alex says:

well, it is obviously that the arctic will be ice free soon :d

Fancy, but “Down-under” we get this gloomy report -

    LIVE: Breaking News
The European Space Agency has released new satellite images of Antarctic ice shelves melting at alarming rates.

The Larsen shelves are thick floating mats of ice that run along the eastern side of the Antarctic peninsula.

Over the last 17 years, Larsen B has shrunk from 11, 500 square kilometres, to its present 1,600 square kilometres.

The Larsen A shelf completely disintegrated in 1995.

Experts say climate change in the region is to blame.

  6. Josh says:

So, sea ice is increasing in the Arctic…and sea ice is increasing in the Antarctic. We live in interesting times.

  7. Fran says:

Something similar to this trend happened in 2010, I’ll look for the link and post it latter. The difference is that then we had the influence of a powerful El Nino, since the end of 2009, now we have La Nina, basically since the end of 2010.

Now, anyone still have doubts that all this is driven by the Sun? The relative dryness of the atmosphere

    (for example,
−1.6% per decade change in cloud cover during 1954–2005 period
    http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/04/04/spencers-posited-1-2-cloud-cover-variation-found/#comment-945764)

is causing the response to be prompter IMO-probably due to the high specific heat of the water that tends to delay temperature variations.
Those here who are following this closely will certainly not be surprised by this report.

The Southern Hemisphere Sea Ice Anomaly is also showing a steady increasing trend since 1980

  10. Kevin K. says:

The spin put on it is that there is a record amount of “thin fragile first year ice” and the ratio to first year ice to multi year ice is the highest ever – all designed to make you think that there is warming. More first year ice = more cold recently than before!

  11. I wonder if the drier conditions in the upper atmosphere has anything to do with it?

  12. Bob Knows says:

They will say that its still below the late 20th century average. But its increasing year over year.

I hoped they were right about warming. Humans have always suffered from cold times and thrived during harm times. Humans also always suffer from idiot politicians, liars, and scams.

    • F. Guimaraes says:

“They will say that its still below the late 20th century average… ” probably yes, but only they’re dishonest.
Take a look at the following map
      http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/N_daily_extent_hires.png
The above average ice extent of the Bering Sea is clearly of similar size to the below average part in N. Europe. The sea ice extent of the N. Hemisphere is at pretty much the same levels as the 1979-2000 average and there is a good chance that in May it will be above that average.
This is happening during the period of the maximum radiation of the present solar cycle, C24, then when the Sun starts to really go into minimum phase things will begin to get really interesting, don’t you think.
Regarding “thriving during warm climates” I’d offer the following counter argument: Newton “invented” modern physics basically during the Maunder minimum and Einstein, Heisenberg, Planck, etc., “invented” both relativities and the initial formulation of Quantum Physics during the long minimum of the beginning of the XX century, and, on the other hand, the WWII happened during cycle C17, which brought very high temperatures in the US and was the first relatively strong cycle after the minimum of the beginning of the XX century.
I guess we may have either good and evil in any climate, depending on which values we accept as good for ourselves and society.

  13. kenneth lund says:

The ice age has begun. It will ONLY get colder and icier over the next 50 to 100 years as solar activity declines.

  14. SteveSadlov says:

I have a vague nagging bad feeling this Spring. False Springs seem to be the pattern. Winter just keeps reasserting itself. Last year that pattern went pretty late. And this year and the year after? …

  15. rhp says:

living in Wisconsin, i’m quite familiar with extensive ice formation. a good cold night can produce a solid sheet of ice all the way across the lake (ice extent). I’ll let you guys take your snowmobiles out on it if you like. I don’t think you’d make it too far before plunging in.

There is little correlation in spring ice coverage with ice extent later in the summer. the correlation is with ice THICKNESS! Would you be honest enough to revisit this issue in August with the same link on ice coverage from NSICD? good luck!
