Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano roared back into action over a week ago, spewing out a hail of rocks, steam and ash.

Although they’re used to the permanent threat of the volcano, many residents say the new activity makes them nervous again.

Popocatepetl is an explosive volcano that can suddenly erupt at tremendous force, thrusting out rocks and ashes at large distances. That kind of volcano can be more dangerous than those releasing only flowing lava.

Locals said that most frightening was the unusual rumbling coming from the volcano, which many compared to an aircraft turbine.

“We’ve never heard a noise like it,” said Maximiliano Grajales.

About 4.5 million people live on the outskirts of the volcano, which lies at the crossroads of the states of Puebla, Morelos and Mexico.

If Popo is the next “big one” it’ll be a complete surprise for me.
I believe we’ll have important news in May, in connection with the magnetic field… few more days.

Unless this cano is a pinatubo calibre explosion… don’t think it will effect the climate.Pinatubo ash circle the globe via the smokestream, worldwide temps dropped 1 to 2degree. I recall once again the super cold winter of 1993-94,hmmm 2a after pinatubo… at my job we were jack hammering, ramming 2 to 4 foot of frozen ground by backhoe. Have not seen that kind of frost since, but never say never. Its a cycle, volcano, cycle, volcano…just my 2 cents.

If there are a number of smaller volcanic eruptions strategically placed around the globe, wouldn’t that amount to the same as having one big one go off?

    • Igor says:

Minor vulcanic eruptions only effect the local region which is the ash fallout. “Stratospheric injection of aerosols by volcanoes is a major cause of short term climate change”. So major volcanic blasts cause a column or thrust of huge ash volumes to reach much higher in the sky, reaching the various jet streams…the ash is carried around the earth in these streams blocking solar radiation. A cooling effect of the atmosphere occurs fast, like walking under a shade tree on a hot sunny day.
