According to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, on June 11, 2012, the South Pole Station measured a new record low temperature.
The mercury dropped to -73.8°C (-100.8°F), breaking the previous minimum temperature record of -73.3°C (-99.9°F) set in 1966.
Must be because of global warming!

So the record (of only the past 46 years) was broken by only 0.9 degrees? And how long have we had people permanently based at the South Pole to provide detailed temperature records?
The world may well be cooling but the media quite rightly dismissed this as insignificant “noise”. Alarmist posts only serve to detract from a reasoned assessment of what is really going on from a global perspective.

What is insignificant about a trend that has lasted for over a quarter of a century, and in fact has become stronger since 2008?
People see what they want to, but to see the facts demands real wisdom.
How so? I don’t have an opinion either way, I just look at the information and assess it on it’s merits. Guess it doesn’t help that I’m a geologist with over 25 years experience (and female by the way). Having a rational, educated outlook is apparently no match for the other (often) extremely emotive comments posted by others.
I’m just so tired of the polarisation promoted…actually plays into the hands of vested interests who love to watch the circus of pitting one ‘team’ against another. I won’t bother commenting again.
If warming is so irrevocable as the Warmo-Panickers are saying, then it is remarkable that any kind of cold record is broken.
Compare the age of this planet if we can estimate it, to the time humans were here, then maybe 0.00000000000000001percentage and they want to tell me humans will change the planet?
Is it then so difficult to see that only one volcanoe and speaking of the smaller ones like we had in Iceland, that threw more co2 into the atmosphere than all humans ever!!

And in Holland the Wageningen university conducted a research on the CO2 levels for the last 1000 years and guess what, it was higher now than ever in history. Doom over the world with rising waterlevels and higher temps for the future. These subsidised idiots with their doomscenario’s have no idea what is going to happen in the very near future. The only thing important to them is the money they get to scare the people. Co2 is becoming very very big business.

For the record Julia Gillard called an election in 2010 AFTER replacing Kevin Rudd as PM. She WAS elected and heads a minority government (we’ve had plenty of those), just like many other western countries at the moment.
IMO the outbreak of minority governments is a very good thing and shows that finally people are fed up with adversarial politics. Polarity thinking is dead, compromise and moderation may yet save us.

There are many areas of science that is ignored strictly for temperature data.
Our sun’s lack of activity has changed the insulation value of our atmosphere. An active sun spews out massive amounts of particles that our outer atmosphere accumulates for protection and insulation.
We have also been measuring atmospheric pressure incorrectly. We measure it by how much pressure it exerts on water when in fact the atmosphere is multi-layered like our water pressure is multi-layered. Velocity difference too is multi-layered but our scientists went the route of averaging instead of learning about our planet to generate trends for trying to predict hot or cold.
Temperatures can be played with to achieve a certain outcome, physical evidence cannot. But physical evidence is definitely ignored for the career paths our current scientists hold on to.
It should be noted that this is not a record cold for Antarctica, Vostock once recorded a 126 F(!) below. [lectrikdog]

That is about 2/3 rds the temperature of the center of the blizzards in the movie, “The day after tomorrow”.
Minor piece of historical/family trivia: My father was on the first wintering over expedition at the geographic south pole during the International Geophysical Year from 1957-1958. He helped build what later became known as the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
Unfortunately you can not see the station that my father helped to build. It was slowly covered over by snow and ice, and I had heard it had been abandoned as structurally unsound due to the weight of snow and ice on it sometime in the late 1970′s early 1980′s. I understand that the current station was constructed such that they could effectively jack it up as needed to keep it on the surface.

I noted in the comments on the orginal article, that the lowest measured temperature in antartica was on the order of -128 degrees F. That was set in July. When I lived in Maine, we normally experienced our coldest temperatures at least 6 weeks after the beginning of winter, or, in Antarctica, that would be the last of July, first of August. It will be interesting to see if this year’s lowest temperature approaches that one from 1966. Still, with this temperature being recorded before their winter even begins, that should be yet another shot across the bow of the UMS(UN Maritime Service) AGW, the flagship of the world takeover fleet.

On a non related note, on http://www.solarham.net I have noticed that all the sun spots seem to be in the southern hemisphere but I thought cycle 24 was suppposed to be in the northern. I know there is overlap but by now, shouldn’t the majority of them be in the northern hemisphere? Does this mean cycle 24 is almost non-existent and really cycle 23 never really ended? Thanks

N and S have not crossed/reversed since ~ 2000 and in this sense we could say that cycle-23 has not ended yet. In addition, if you look at the graph of pg.16 of the following document

you’ll see that this presently observed behavior has no precedent at least since the beginning of the XX century.
This is another strong evidence IMO that we’re entering a solar grand minimum and of the validity of the Livingston-and-Penn effect

I gather this was a daily record after all and not an all time record. This is still remarkable, but it might be better to watch the hype.

I have always wondered at the AGW statements that a 10 degree rise in temperature would cause the ice caps to melt – it has seemed unlikely that a change from -100 to -90 degrees would cause any significant melting of anything. I guess it was too much to expect rationality out of religious fanatics.

That is not a record cold temperature for Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. It has been much colder on many occasions, with the present record set on June 23, 1982 of -82.8 C (-117.0 F).
The record high was set on Christmas Day last year of -12.3 C (9.9 F) and was on Fox news.

One place where it definitely is not cooling is here in the United States. The last 2 summers were extremely warm in Michigan where I am at and this summer is shaping up to be more of the same. They are talking about 100 degrees here on Thursday!
And yet it’s only 54 degrees in Seattle, some 15 degrees below normal.
You have to look at temperatures all over the world in order to get the true picture of global warming or cooling. Too many people look at their own little region and believe that is how it is everywhere. Michigan is not the entire world. One has only to look at the ferocity and high number of tornado spawning thunderstorms around the world in recent years to summarize that Global Cooling is real and ongoing. Thunderstorms form when Cold air collides with warm moist southern air. There has to be a LOT more cold air in the atmosphere today than there has been in decades.
It is not just happening in Michigan though. The Midwest and Plains States from Texas north into the Dakotas are sweltering. And this summer has just started!
As an aside, many have looked at the sizzling temps we are experiencing in Texas and still hollering “global warming”! Excuse me! Its SUMMER and Summers in Texas are always hot. So far, no records broken this year!
Well vostok station is forecast to be a low of -105F Tue- thur. Wind chills of above -139F. Now that’s cold. But I know I saw in early may concordia station with a temp of -120F when I saw that and how early it was in The season I knew it was going to be a cold winter there..

I don’t know what part of Michigan you are from, but where I’m at in Michigan it is forecast to be 95 on Thursday. Where in Michigan is it to be 100?
BTW, in 1995 I was in the U.P. in June when it was 104. There is nothing unusual about the weather, especially for Michigan.
Check the official record books. The all time record low is -88C, recorded at Vostok Antarctic. Unofficially, Denali (Mount McKinley) may have exceeded it one time when the wind chill was below -148F!
So I was wondering about those big forest fires out West. An awful lot of heat being generated there, and it doesn’t just escape the atmosphere right away. It’s going to hit a cold layer that effectively caps it in like an inversion. Also will affect the barometric pressure. Probably 99 percent of this current midwest heat is due to what is called compressional warming. To say nothing of what kind of particulates and water vapor and reflectivity changes might be happening due to these terrible fires, yet I’m sure there were terrific wildfires before man entered the picture… just musin’

let me know when we are officially over with our current ice, blah blah blah greenland – iceland, and then we can start talking about real climate change, when ocean currents start warming in an alarming rate especially the ones near greenland and such, and by then i will ahve been dead for several hundred years and it wont matter anyway, Condos on Mars, the Moon or where the hell ever, this earth has been through alot more punishment that mankind has put it through unless we set of every nuke in all out war than it will be here for a while, and even if we do burn and scorch the earth you will be surprised by how life of anykind is not all that fragile !!!!
