“Remember the blizzard that hit the Christchurch area?” asks reader Argiris Diamantis. “There was so much snowfall that a heavy locomotive was used to plow the tracks and to clear the route.”

The Kiwirail train is plowing a route through Arthur’s Pass (el. 920 m.), a mountain pass in the Southern Alps of the South Island of New Zealand.

The pass is named after Sir Arthur Dudley Dobson (1841–1934), who led the first party of Europeans across the pass in 1864.

So much for global warming.

That’s a fairly low elevation snow event for such a moderate, Marine West Coast Climate Zone.
