Fri, Jul 13: Global National’s Francis Silvaggio and crew were at the scene of an incredible mudslide at Johnsons Landing in British Columbia on Friday. Global News cameras were rolling the whole time.
Four people remain missing
Fri, Jul 13: Four people are still unaccounted for after a landslide in the southeastern British Columbia community of Johnsons Landing. Francis Silvaggio reports.
What caused this landslide?
“A super-saturation of the land above, combined with the snow melt and a possible pooling of water by natural damming, could all have contributed to triggering the slide,” says this article on Canada.com.
“Rainfall in June doubled previous records in the West Kootenay, said Bill Macpherson, spokesman for the Central Kootenay Regional District.”

Lucky his family had a boat,looked like mother nature trying to harpoon his boat from under water with 100foot jack pines…and the 6foot tidal wave would have capsized him,he’s very lucky. Massive amounts of snow or glacier fuel,melting at the top of the mountain was responsible. Glaciers take time to build,some years fire (heat)wins but next year the ice will be back…especially with an el nino return this winter, which is 50percent and greater of a chance N.0.A.A is predicting recently.
WOAH! Pretty crazy, I wounder what elevation this all started at… Maybe a glacier started mowing trees down and creating a wall of earth, add in the natural dam effect of water from glacier, maybe stuck under and this is what you get.
Notice there is no talk from these videos of record snow, they blame only rain. These people should not rebuild, notice how mud flows right through valleys as obviously its the least path of resistance. That’s right where glaciers will be carving down first and maybe in the next few years…
Story did mention snow melt as a cause. Another region of B.C.is where 4 people lost their lives,the aftermath looked greater in that region. Imagine a 400ft wall of water,car sized boulders rushing down the hudson valley river…when,13000a ago the era was called Intra-Allerod cold period. An ice age melt that caused a mini iceage from huge volumes of cold fresh water,innundating atlantic ocean currents!! This world is strange physics,the more I read on the topic of climate,geography,astronomy…more questions arise excellent.
Holly cow! terrible for the residents. These geophysical events do happen and if one is in the path then its just terrible. Impossible to predict but mountains do fall and there plenty of signs of past slides in all worlds mountain areas. In NZ a new alpine lake was formed a few years ago when half a mountain fell into a valley! Also a lake was pushed into a river to form a flash flood many years ago. Luckily those areas of NZ has no inhabitants.
I think these processes are just part of mountain processes humans are just in wrong place at wrong time.
Thank you for posting Robert. This is truly amazing. The first time we have seen a SIDWAYS landslide. Just like in your book, where I think from memory you said the earth moved sideways 250 mph in the past.
It is doubtless a soil flow due to the exceeding of the liquid limit of Atterberg. The liquid fraction in the soil is so high that the soil itself acts like a fluid.

very very risky and doubtful for quite some time till it drains and settles, and with your summer peaking and cool, autumn there would be wet? and snow for winter.
i think that poor wife/mother may have to accept a long wait for proof of death if ever,and accept a general monument at best
Wow imagine enjoying a peaceful boat ride on the river on your day off and you see a huge wave of debris headed for your boat. If your engine wouldn’t start on time while your stopped at the rivers edge – it would be all over !!
