“I can’t update fast enough!” says David Loring of Quakewatch.

“69 events from the National Geographic Catalogue.”

“As at 05 Jul _100mm to ~120 mm of uplift across a 15 km area between stations HI05 and HI10.”

“A series of mag 3+ has just started. Could this be the event???” asks David.

    Popcorn is at the ready!!!

  2. Matt Rosenboom says:

Anyone looked at the one in Iceland lately? There seems to be a real uptick in seismicity there as well; wonder what the impact would be if that one and the one in Spain erupted?

  3. Ian says:

I suppose if an eruption were to start at Katla this would solve the problems of long delays at immigration at Heathrow … perhaps El Hierro too, not sure if this would be the right sort of volcanic event!

  4. David L says:

This El Hierro thing really is quite fascinating. It has calmed down again now but I am sure it will go again. It is like it is breathing – inflation, stop, inflation, stop etc etc.

The pattern of quakes is interesting as well. It moved from the centre of the island to the edge and seems to be moving back and forth in the same area now.

Magma is on the move for certain and really the inflation is lifting not only most of the island but must also be lifting a substantial area of the sea bed. In a South Westerly direction starting at the North East tip of the island the uplift goes from 30 mm to ~120 mm (on the 5th so may be over that now. So if you can picture this basically the SW corner of the island is rising up in the air.

The pattern of quakes would indicate that the centre of this is off shore by a few kilometres so by what amount has the seabed raised at the central point? Then it must go down the other side. From the 30mm point to the centre of the activity is ~26km so we could be looking at lift over as much as +50 km. By comparison Katla is ~10km and only comes close to the distance if Eyjafjallajokull is included. It is a major area of uplift and must be fed by much energy.

Some say this is dike intrusion, and it may be as there are patterns of lines from time to tie but it could also be a new cone about to form. We will probably know very soon!

I just finished updating my site to today’s 38 Mag 2.5+ and went back to look at the list no more than 20 minutes later and it is now 47 Mag 2.5+.

Check out the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake for information on the possible consequences of a large geological problem in that area
