The Sakurajima volcano is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes.
Residents of Kagoshima donned face masks to protect themselves while sweeping away the ash.
The volcano has erupted more than 600 times this year and is expected to continue its intermittent eruptions.

All this crud going up in the atmosphere lately. I gotta think we are in for a cool winter.
Did she just say the plume rose 1000 km in the air? lol.
yup she did!
must be of the gore school of millions of degrees heat in the core for thermal power…
see the shock wave it sent out?
one hell of a bang!
that shockwave is only noticed on the time-lapse section of the video.
kind of misleading, looks cool though.
Wow, all these volcanos going off this year has to have a cumlative effect and I agree we will have a colder winter…
Really?!? The ash went 621 miles up? I thought space started about 50 miles up.
The Americans are not familiar with the metric system. Obviously she meant to say “One Thousand Meters”. That is one kilometer. One meter is roughly equal to one yard. Japan is home to a multitude of volcano’s. Perhaps the famous Mount Fuji [just west of Tokyo] is going to erupt soon so we are told. Ordinary strato volcano’s erupting is not such a big threat to global climate. However, the world is peppered with many “super volcano” anyone of which erupting would certainly plunge the world into the next great ice age. The frightening thing about super volcano’s is that they are almost impossible to predict and you might be living near to one and not even realise it ! In the USA there is the famous Yellowstone Caldera. But it is only one of many others. No matter where you might live in the world there is certainly a potential super volcano not so far from your location. The Japanese “Sakurajima” [Cherry Blossom Mountain] is always erupting and is thus no real threat to anyone. On the other hand super volcano’s rarely ever erupt, but when they do they are massive. Look at the video of Sakurajima erupting and imagine something at least a thousand times bigger. That is what a small super volcano going off would look like.
This might seem like a naive question, but how can a volcano erupt 600 times in less than 8 months? Maybe the definition of “erupt” means every cloud of smoke?
There we have a pattern that could lead to a major eruption, if the pattern intensifies.
I believe this is the only volcano with a continued eruption pattern in the world presently.
If we read what happened in Krakatoa in 1883,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883_eruption_of_Krakatoa
it’s close to unbelievable the power that a major event like this has. It started to show signs that it’d happen many months before the final event.
