“An Italian geologist has developed a system for earthquake prediction based on interference with radio signals,” says reader Mirco Poletto.

“This reminds me of the system developed by Varotsos and his staff still in the 80′s that you mention in your book,” says Poletto. “So my colleague should not have discovered anything new. Now the question is if his system will go the way of the Greek one, that will be first degraded and then virtually forgotten.”

Here’s an article about his system.

The 34th International Geological Congress scheduled August 5 to 10 in Brisbane, Australia is expected to attract over 5 000 scientists from 111 different countries.

During the congress, Parmesan Valentino Straser will present two reports on precursors of earthquakes, a very timely topic. “There is much talk recently of the possibility of predicting earthquakes, explains Parmesan, a geologist.  You can not predict the exact moment of an earthquake or its magnitude, but there are signals – seismic precursors – that occur before a shock.

For example, electromagnetic interference. (Italics added) In the first of my reports will present an analysis of these interferences, while the second will address the theme of the need for a systematic study of these precursors.”

This is important to me because in my book Not by Fire but by Ice, I maintain that continental drift and other tectonic forces are driven by electromagnetic forces.

Straser, an independent researcher, who has been studying these phenomena for years, was recently  appointed to the Working Group Ievpc, “International earthquake and volcano prediction center” headquartered in Orlando, California.

“At the moment,” says Straser, “we are concentrating our observations in a region of Kamchatka, Russian Far East, and our focus is in particular the prediction of earthquakes greater than magnitude 6. So far, we have been able to predict the epicentral area and the period of an earthquake, but not the magnitude. The results are encouraging, however. ”

Of course, “for now we can only speak in terms of “coincidences” of phenomena, the geologist emphasized, ”but this is the first step to gather the information needed to start a verification and scientific experimentation.”

“To participate in the conference is a great satisfaction,” Straser adds, “very few researchers get to represent each nation. ”

17 Responses to Predict earthquakes? “Encouraging results”

  1. Power Grab says:

Yesterday afternoon there was a wildfire and an earthquake less than an hour from me:

    http://www.stwnewspress.com/local/x1962235261/Stillwater-wildland-fire-destroys-houses-prompts-evacuations

    http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/35.37.-98.-96_eqs.php

Between the start of the wildfire (around 2:00 p.m. local time, according to the newspaper article) and the earthquake (logged at 3:43 p.m. local time by the USGS), we had a disturbance in our electrical system. At around 2:35, the power flickered at least twice, a few seconds apart. My computer was running a process that takes several minutes to complete. I remember worrying that I might have to re-start it if my computer bombed. My computer did not bomb, but some computers in the front office reset themselves.

I was talking to a friend who lives out near the wild fire. My friend said that they thought a person whose muffler was dragging and creating sparks had started the fire, but there was also a point farther west that looked like a point of ignition. That location has an electrical substation. My friend who works for the rural electrical cooperative said there was a blink on the transmission lines, but he didn’t think that could start a fire.

Finally, there were spikes on the Xray solar flare chart and the geomagnetic K index chart on spaceweather.com that were near that point in time.

    I know…just a coincidence.

    • AndrewS says:

      Maybe not just a coincidence?…
While reading this article, it occurred to me that the Earth is somewhat like a battery. Constant influx of solar energy coming in at the poles directed by magnetism and not all of that energy is limited to the atmosphere. Lightning associated with volcanism, while some of that can be explained by static electricity the lightning appears to jump right out of the flowing lava and up into the sky(look at pics of Chaiten or Eyjaffjallajokul). There is not only a potential charge difference between the ground and upper atmosphere, but between ground and Earths core as well. It must represent a google-normous amount of energy. (putting it mildly)

      • igor says:

The ionosphere, earths electrical conductive layer has enough energy to exist till the earths core(dynamo theory) actually fails.Crude oil would be obsolete if earths own power can be harnessed, lightning has mega voltage but no duration of amps, that’s why more than a few people survive lightning strikes. Man can predict or witness nature via radio telescopes, satellite data, atmospheric conditions radar but earths core (theory)mohorovicic discontinuity is not a fact. The sun and earths magnetophere mesh together all day long, earthquakes could be a by product of such physics. Related to the recent( Sun) sub atomic magnetics activity, there may be a world record power outage for millions of people from india yesterday!!The Suns in charge and she’s giving us warning signals for her transition to very quiet solar activity, just around the corner and it has happened before.

      • Beano says:

Volcanos and Lightning are both fascinating natural events. Lightning actually goes up. e.g. A small electrical trace comes down from the clouds and hits a path which will release a large electrical bolt upwards from the earth.
Being around a volcanic vent even during a small eruption is considerably dangerous – one of the main dangers being lightning.
Any lightning bolt is far far larger in electrical strength than humans can reproduce by many many magnitudes.

There are millions of lightning bolts produced world wide each year throughout the earths upper atmosphere.

AS with many earths natural occurrences, relatively little is known about the electrical properties of lightning and derivatives. Elves and Sprites have only recently been recognised as real phenomena.

      • Power Grab says:

If you read the material on thunderbolts.info, you will find that many people describe the earth and the sun as operating like capacitors. ;-)

        • igor says:

Were all still connected somehow to the sigularity(bigbang)were in a controlled explosion from a single point of energy. So there may be those channels of electrical energy in solar systems (sun acts as capacitor). Thornhill also mentioned the sun breaks the laws of physics via dark sunspots,he has a very common sense view of the suns electrical properties.

      • F. Guimaraes says:

The existence of a connection with the magnetosphere and the interplanetary field (IMF), seems to be of the central aspects of the present climate change (possibly towards a new Ice Age) and the variation of solar radiation.
But, is there enough energy in the IMF to cause seismicity and volcanic activity on Earth?
It seems too weak (1 to 37 nT) to cause this,

    • snowman says:

no coincidence just good observation. thanks and keep it up.

  2. Beano says:

The USGS has already investigated this radio interference pre earthquake phenomenon. They have concluded that the radio interference warnings are too close to the actual earthquake event to be of any real use. i.e. by the the time the interference information has been collated and a warning sent out the earthquake event had already happened. They dropped more research into this.

  3. Steven Rowlandson says:

When you have a volcanic eruption eject pyroclastic materials you get particles striking each other creating a static charge resulting in volcanic lightning. The fundamental force behind plate tectonics and volcanism is rising magma due to heat created by radioactive decay. If you aim enough electromagnetic energy at a fault with a frequency of 2.5 hertz it is possible to set up a harmonic resonance that could trigger an earthquake like what happened on 311. HAARP was transmitting a signal at 2.5 hertz from march 8th to march 11th.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSBjEvPH2j4&feature=topics
Click on the link and watch what happened.

From march 8th through the 11th something triggered a massive burst of quake activity for 3 days just before the 9.0 earth quake and at the same time the Gakona HAARP site was transmitting at 2.5 hertz for 3 days. Interesting coincidence don’t you think?

  4. john the 1st says:

I don’t know. Every few years someone claims a method of predicting earthquakes. Chinese fish or animals turning up missing, it never pans out. I have lived on the west coast and in Japan a good amount of my life. I’ve never seen my animals act odd prior to a quake and I’ve been in dozens upon dozens. Sometimes a couple a week when I lived in Japan. I survived the Kobe quake of 95. Was staring right at my two dumb cats both curled up sleeping when it hit. Spilled my coffee all to heck. Can’t speak to radio signal interruption. But none of my electronics have acted up in a meaningful way prior to a quake. There are probably too many factors involved to come up with a reliable method of prediction. Keep trying though. Would be nice to avoid tragedies like 95. Lost a lot of freinds in that bit of misery.

  5. John2000 says:

I agree with this research. For many years I use radio interference for my investigations of seismic events.
    But see: http://www.vlf.it/cumiana/livedata.html
    and do read: http://www.glcoherence.org/monitoring-system/earth-rhythms.html
I use a.o. Cumiana for my study but admit this is too ‘rough’ to predict. Dr. Khalikov (Google him) is the man who pushes this idea and uses somewhat unconventional e.m.-methods and tools to achieve ‘promising’ results. See:
    http://geochange-report.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=39&Itemid=57
    Certainly something to follow!

  6. Juergen says:

    Satellite Sun Interference is known.
    http://www.intelsat.com/resources/tech-talk/satellite-sun-interference.asp

It depends on the wave length/frequenccy but you have to consider that other interference can effect the same wave length/frequenccy.
How to pick it out of the noise? And the other question is where will it take place?

The paper from GuI-QING ZHANG “Relationship between global seismicity and solar activities” is about the external impact on the earth.

    First page: http://www.springerlink.com/content/buvw2tq081013210/fulltext.pdf?page=1
Note: Change the “page=1″ to “2 and 3″ and you can read a bit more.

Based on this relationship, Piers Corbyn is trying to make prediction.

  7. qf says:

Being a radio Ham Im a little interested in what they have tested. Theres a rather large ‘radio’ spectrum out there..It would fit in somewhat with Piers Corbyn’s eddict that the solar proton flux interferes with the geomagnetic field and influences EQ. It seems that geologists are always looking for tress relief scenarios in faults with out any ’cause’ other than its build up of stress in the fault with a release. Is the EM interference a ’cause’ or ‘result’?

  8. Power Grab says:

In this morning’s news, the story of the cause of the fire is now that there was an SUV that was having problems and stopped twice, igniting the dry grass at those locations.

Well, maybe. But it also makes me start thinking again about these modern vehicles (cars, planes) that use drive-by-wire or fly-by-wire technology. I don’t know how new this alleged SUV is supposed to be, but I wonder if it was messed up by some localized electrical activity. The news story said it was backfiring.

FWIW, my personal opinion about those Toyota stuck-accelerator situations, and that plane crash off the coast of Brazil a year or two ago, is that their drive-by-wire functions were corrupted by abnormal electrical activity in the vicinity. I mean, if you can program your iPhone to control a vehicle from a distance (and you can, from what I read), then what’s to prevent electrical anomalies from doing something similar?

One more thing – one day as I was out to lunch and getting ready to sit down with my food, the bluetooth device in my ear briefly played snatches from as many as 3 cell phone conversations that my phone was not party to. When I got back and checked the X ray solar flare chart, I found that there had been a flare at that time.

I used to have a wristwatch that would reset itself when we had a big solar flare.

  9. Dean Geary says:

I hope this guy isn’t one of the Italian Geologists that is being prosecuted for NOT predicting the earthquake that killed over 300 people in Onna Italy.
