Russia – Historic floods kill more than 100
Two month’s worth of rain in just a few hours. More rain in the forecast.
At least 103 people were killed and thousands of homes flooded after torrential rains – as much as 11 inches (28cm) – inundated parts of the Krasnodar region of southern Russia overnight.
Some of the victims were electrocuted while others were swept into the sea. Many of the dead were elderly people who had been sleeping and drowned.
“It all happened during the night,” Anna Kovalyovskaya, whose parents were in the flood zone, told the Russian News Service. “Two-story houses were flooded up to the second floor. ”
“People were running out into the streets in their underwear and wrapping their children in blankets,” said Kovalyovskaya. “People were only able to save their passports.”
“There is no electricity and the shops are shut,” she added. “Many people have lost everything and are in a state of panic.”
RT said an average two-months’ rain fell in just a few hours in the popular holiday region on the Black Sea where Russia will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Russian TV showed thousands of houses in the region nearly completely submerged, forcing many residents to take refuge in trees or on rooftops.
No such floods ‘in our history’
“No one can remember such floods in our history,” said Aleksandr Tkachyov, governor of the Krasnodar region. “There was nothing of the kind for the last 70 years,” Itar-Tass news agency quoted him as saying.
More rain was in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.
Transport system said to have collapsed
“The region’s transportation is in a state of collapse,” a transportation spokesman said, and Russian Railways’ website said all trains heading to and from Novorossiisk had been suspended.
“The water has risen half a meter above the rails,” it said.
More rain is in the forecast.
Can you imagine if that 11 inches of rain had have fallen in the winter? That would have been 110 inches of snow. Nine feet of snow. In just a few hours.
This is how ice ages begin.

That is a lot of rain that fell.
Good thing it didn’t happen in the winter and fall as snow.

I think I read on this site awhile back to multiply the rain number by 10 to get the equivelant of snow so 11 inches of rain equals 110 inches or 10 feet of snow. Amazing. Its on the same latitude as the upper US and Europe. Wow.
I truly feel sorry for all those people that lost their lives or were/are stranded with little or no shelter. (Where is Noah when we need him?)
Like the comment says, imagine nine feet of snow overnight. I wonder if that’s how the Woolly Mammoths got stuck and froze.
While our “Mid-West” could use the water, it is the other side of the world gets flooded. Lucky we live in an age of world communication, for we need to record how Global Cooling acts before the “The Little Ice Age” or the “Big One” hits. Maybe in 100 years or 100,000 years, we can keep closer watch and not be fooled by hoaxes.
Marcus I don’t think you will have to wait anywhere near that long. They cycle has already begun. Unless the sun kicks itself into high gear we are in for some real cold times.
But most of the people were brainwashed to believe in AGW! Now they are all taken by surprise..
From a friend IN Russia..
:There was heavy rains in the mountains and caused a flash flood – maybe 70 or 100 years ago was the last one – and the area was full of vacationers.
Last report I saw said that 115 people were killed.
The rescue department here is very good and 180° away from how the USA handles disasters.”
so like the heat before its NOT unprecedented just not common.
it also PROVES Piers Corbyns warning for savage weather to be spot on once again.
150 people are now known to have died in this unprecedented tragedy.
Russian pride. As predictable as taxes. How the heck would he know how the US handles disasters?
I remember the Chernobyl disaster, and the quakes in Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. They didn’t do such a stellar job.
I’ll take the US approach to disaster relief over Russia’s any day of the week.
he happens to have been in one of the services, as well as many other careers he isnt some dumb young thing by a long shot.
you wanna talk about misplaced patriotism look closer to old glorys corruption at home.
oh, using Katrina as a shining example maybe? roflmao
Having lived the ex-pat life style for several years I understand the preference for other countries mind set quite well. I was living in Kobe Japan in 1995 when the Great Hanshin quake hit taking roughly 6500 souls. Lost 12 of my students and 3 acquaintances to that one. You really shouldn’t award to much credibility to someone just because they say they were in the military. 99% of those that serve never see combat or respond to a disaster zone. My uncle put 34 years in and while he saw a lot of combat he never responded to a natural disaster. I myself have 25 years of service. I have served with Danes, Brits, Aussies, Ukrainians, Italians, Spaniards, Mexicans, Guatemalans, Germans, Japanese,Poles,Iraqis,Koreans and Afghans. I have been called 3 times to fight forest fires, once to help with tornado damage, twice for floods, and yes I responded to New Orleans for Katrina relief. I have been called twice for civil disturbances. I am an Infantry soldier and as such have been in combat several times. I consider myself a far better judge of how the US and other countries respond to disaster than most folks.
At any rate it wasn’t a personal attack. I find those distasteful, inappropriate and unnecessary, especially on this site. If I have in anyway offended you I apologize.
But you do have to wonder at the incredible number of Russians and Ukrainians that immigrate to the US every year. They must be looking for something and trying to get away from something don’t you think? Also I think those that feel Mr. Putin stole the election this year might look at things a little differently than you or your friend.
Take care.
And one more thing; if you ever travel to Russia bring as many cartons of American cigarettes and as much bourbon as you can lawfully get with you. You will find that you have to bribe everyone, everywhere to get anything. I find Marlboro reds and Jack Daniels get the best results.
Didn’t they have 8 feet or so of snow in Argentina in 2 weeks just recently?
A cool atmosphere holds less water. What is held aloft by warmth, precipitates out with cooling.
I know this is a very general statement but it’s basically true.
In a sense, severe floods and storms in temperate zones mean atmospheric cooling.
Not good.
Europe is the bell weather (canary in the coalmine if you like) of the worlds climate system.
And unlike the mam made warmist’s I’d love to be wrong, trouble is I don’t think I am!

“Two month’s worth of rain in just a few hours.”
Change rain in summer in snow in winter and it could be problematic. I hope Putin likes snow.
