Just imagine if that rain had fallen as snow!

Heavy rain caused part of the roof of a North Carolina mall to collapse Friday, reports NBC News in Charlotte, North Carolina.

NBC station WCNC  reported that the SouthPark Mall was evacuated and emergency crews were on the scene. The Charlotte Observer said no injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service said rainfall produced two inches per hour in the Charlotte area Friday.

However, WCNC-TV reported that more than 3½ inches of rain fell near SouthPark Mall in just one hour – between 4:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.

Just imagine if that rain had fallen as snow! Thirty five inches – almost a meter – in one hour!

Perhaps a preview of things to come? If there were a way to bet on the weather I would bet this winter will be a doozy for the good ole’ US of A.

When a similar thing hit us in 1948, our fields were under water. Our dad told us 5 older kids to catch grasshoppers; we were going to Yellowstone Park & go fishing. That’s exactly what we did. Fiddlin

Well yesterday were I live in northeastern Italy we had 30 mm of rain in about twenty minutes. My neighbor has almost found the water coming from the courtyard into the house. In fact me too thought about what would happen if all that water had been snow…

I really enjoy your web site and all the insightful opinions and comments posted. However, you somewhat discredit the cause with comments such as this one. Getting 3.5 inches of rain in an hour is remarkable but not that unusual. To relate it to snowfall is ludicrous. The factors that came together for such a rainfall event in the summer could never occur when it is cold enough for snow, particularly not in Charlotte.

A city in new jersey in the 1930s had over 7inches of rain in 1 hour! I dont remember what town or the exact year but it remains the state record to this day for a 1 hour rainfall total.
