Previously strategies for geoengineering have merely been theorised, yet never implemented, however two engineers at Harvard are finalising the details of a plan to test one form of geoengineering.
As improbable as it sounds, volcanos actually cool down the atmosphere. They release billions of tiny, sun-reflecting particles into the stratosphere which then prevent a small percentage of solar energy from reaching the earth. The two Harvard researchers, David Keith (beneficiary of a multimillion dollar geoengineering research fund from Bill Gates) and James Anderson, will spray thousands of tonnes of sulphate aerosols into the atmosphere above New Mexico in order to replicate this effect.
The chemical will be sprayed from a balloon (it must be an imposingly big balloon to hoist ‘thousands of tonnes of sulphate aerosols’ into the air) 80,000 feet above Fort Summer. The effects on the atmosphere will then be carefully measured.
The test will not be done on a large enough scale to actually affect climate change, nor will it have any major effects on the immediate environment; at least that is what they believe. A recent article shows that previous human attempts to artificially alter the environment have not met with much success.
If I lived in New Mexico – or anywhere downwind of this arrogant experiment – I’d be incensed at the idea of someone spraying thousands of tons of sulphate aerosols in the sky above my head.

After all these years of countless articles about climate change, if this really sounds “improbable” to people, it shows how utterly ignorant and easily duped we are. Personally I think it’s the author who thinks we are so stupid we don’t already know this.
I agree this is a dumb idea. We already know what this aerosol does in nature. Why are they doing this then? At best it seems like a colossal waste of money.

sulfates are/were a major part of smog, and cause acid rain which was thought in a previous green hysteria in the 1970′s to be causing the acidification of lakes.
turns out there wasn’t enough acid in the acid rain to be causing the acidification of the lakes — it was modern fire-fighting / forestry practices.
by preventing forest fires, tons and tons of acidic unburnt leaves on the forest floor was causing the acidification of lakes. (burnt forests [i.e. ash] are “basic” [i.e. the "opposite" of acidic] and naturally counteract the acidification of lakes.
never-the-less $BILLIONS were spent to stop emitting sulfates into the atmosphere, primarily by diverting power in the coal plants to “scrubbing” the smoke stacks.
it was a good thing, and smog has been eradicated in North America for all practical purposes.
I am personally very enthusiastic about the final result.
if it was _really_ necessary at this point to start pumping sulfates into the air, it would be $ BILLIONS cheaper to just stop scrubbing the coal plant smoke stacks and get the twin “benefits” of sulfate pollution and cheaper electric power.

Ok, so it’s been awhile since my chemistry class – so, I looked up sulfates and, lo and behold – it’s sulfuric acid salts – Oh boy! At the same time they are going to do this, there is a big push at the EPA to get those nasty coal plants to GET THE SULFUR OUT OF THEIR EXHAUST!!! evil wicked stuff. Not only are the greens out to get us, they appear to be suffering from multiple personality disorder. This New Mexico thing is supposed to be a “test” I am glad I don’t live down there – wonder if the New Mexico folks know they have been signed up as guinea pigs for this?
Cannot help but think of Newtons third law of action-reaction. Just feels like this is bonkers territory, putting tons of this stuff into the atmosphere.
Well what will probably happen is they (the Greenies) will use the already cooling planet as justification that their SO2 injection worked as planned, and that they saved us from man made global warming with a man made cure.
