And how come they don’t mention that the records they’re talking about go back for only 33 years? We’re supposed to panic over a broken record that covers only 33 years?
I’ve received countless emails from global warming activists in the last few days, crowing about Arctic ice reaching record lows.
But “if global warming is taking place, then why is the ice cover in Antarctica not declining?” asks reader John McC.

Antarctic icecap continues its steady growing trend
Despite the strong oscillations that happen on a daily basis, where we can see in the graph that the SP icecap has had a positive anomaly during the entire year of 2012, which if confirmed for the rest of the year would be and unprecedented mark.
Just 2 weeks ago the anomaly reached +900,000 km2, and I believe it’ll reach the +1 million mark again this year.
This data is also in agreement with the reports of unusual cold from S. Africa and Australia and, because (as you remarked in another post) the Antarctic icecap contains 90% of the glaciers of the world, this could also be an important factor in the recently observed lowering of sea levels, since 2010 (when the 2nd highest record anomaly was reached in the SP) (See http://iceagenow.info/2011/09/sea-level-continues-inexorable-decline/ )

Now, after years of waiting, the Arctic sea ice extent has – at least according to some monitoring sources (See: Update: NOAA Showing 28% More Ice Than The 2007 Minimum) – dipped below the 2007 amount.
Of course this is only since satellite monitoring of Arctic began in 1979, so we are in reality talking about 33 years of monitoring.
Has the Arctic record been achieved yet? See Anthony Watts: ‘The NSIDC product, the new and improved “multi-sensor” MASIE product, which shows no record low at ~ 4.7 million square kilometers.’
See also NOAA’s National Ice Center Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) plot, which also shows no reason for claiming a record at all.
Global warming activists are clinging to Arctic ice shifts as their number one claim of scientific “proof” as they seek to keep the man-made global warming movement alive.
However, current Arctic ice shifts are not “proof” of man-made global warming, nor are they unusual, unprecedented or cause for alarm, according to multiple peer-reviewed studies, data analyses and experts.
In December 2011, Climate Depot released the A-Z Climate Reality Check report, noting: “The scientific reality is that on virtually every claim — from A-Z — the claims of the promoters of man-made climate fears are failing.”
Since that report was issued and presented to the UN climate conference in Durban South Africa, the claims of man-made climate promoters have continued to fail on every issue from sea levels to polar bears to global temperatures to Mt. Kilimanjaro to extreme weather claims to hurricanes to tornadoes to Antarctic ice. The failure has been so complete that global warming activists and many in the media are now forced to point to any bad weather event as somehow “proof” of man-made global warming.
None-the-less, the media keeps howling about the current “record-breaking Arctic ice conditions.

This is like taking a glass of ice from a frozen swimming pool. The number is so small that it is outside the statistical margins of certainty’
And the reduction was aided by a super storm this year. Note how eerily similar all of this sounds to a November 2nd, 1922 article in the Washington Post article titlted “Arctic Ocean Getting Warm; Seals Vanish and Icebergs Melt”:” The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consul Ifft, at Bergen, Norway. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone…Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.”

There will always be ups and downs in the weather. No doubt even during past Ice Ages there were days when the sun was getting through. So the weather is not going to change just because of some CO2 emmissions. In past times the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was as much as two thousand times greater than it is today and yet still there were Ice Ages. In my opinion no matter even if we face some degree of global warming the fact is that there is going to be a super volcano eruption some where in the world some day and that will certainly bring on the next Ice Age and probably the death of virtually every human being on this planet. We are nothing compared to the power of mother nature. All of human civilization has occurred with in the past ten thousand years of warm inter glacial. The next Ice Age is already showing its teeth. We are already getting to realise that we are in a tight corner. Over population being our worst enemy. Resources such as simple water are now harder to find. We are informed that we are going to have to start eating “micro live stock” namely insects ! Personally I would rather eat my next door neighbour [cannibalism] than have to eat sausages made out of insects. Actually I am a vegetarian. So do not get worried about me turning into a man eating terrorist.
However, amidst all the real terrorism going on I believe that indeed there are not just a few cannibalist going around !
They also failed to mention that Climatic Autumn has started on the West Coast. This AM I encountered decreasing temperature with decreasing elevation, a sure sign summer has departed. This is our Autumnal pattern. We are expecting a short offshore wind episode followed by a return to typical crisp Fall days. The onset of the rains cannot be far off.

“Arctic Ice Extent Shatters More Records” – this was released April 5th – but NOT A WORD from any of these liars. What about the exploration ship which was stuck in thick ice near Barrow,AK in early August ?? That means we have “record ice extent” in the arctic in August – not the other way around. What about sea levels falling by 5mm per year since 2010 ???? Again, they fail to report ANY of the real data on growing ice and falling sea levels. They are simply insane and desparate.
Exactly, the correct statement would be “oscillating”.
We’re observing great “oscillations” rather than record lows, because the Arctic icecap is also quickly and consistently going back to levels pre-warming during the winter.
Of course, they don’t say that because they would have to explain the oscillations and the high seaice extent since 2008, except 2011, and if they did that they’d have to admit that the Sun is the main cause of the oscillations and, therefore, their GW models are completely bogus.
In my opinion they deserve to be hanged for treason by a lynch mob.
Shell Oil has been delayed in drilling the Chukchi Sea due to unusually heavy sea ice this summer.
Steven Goddard has mentioned that the Arctic melt season may reach a record low this year. How come no one is crowing about that? Eh?

Over at WUWT Mr. Watts points out that the data that shows that a record was set came from an old less accurate array. The NSIDC’s newest array shows no record. Neither does NOAA, or NASA and none of the other ice monitoring nations are reporting this record. This is just disingenous cra*.

The storm that the Arctic Row team reported came from the Bering Sea and through the Chukchi Sea. That confirms with the broken ice.

The best part about this is they don’t even give the credit for the ice melt to the record storm they had the first week of August! There have only been 8 storms in satelite history of the Arctic that were more powerful and their avg life span was 40hrs. The storm from August 4th-August 8th lasted 120 hrs! It pushed warm water North into the Arctic ice and melted some of it. The thinner Arctic ice was broken up by the storm and pushed South behind the storm into the warmer water. This is what destroyed the Arcitic ice and is leading to the new low. Claire Parkinson of the NASA Goddard Inst even said that the storm would
“lead to a more serious decay of the summertime ice cover than would have been the case otherwise,even perhaps leading to a new Arctic sea ice minimum”
check the satelite images of the before and after of the Arctic ice sheets from the storm in the link provided and you will see exactly what destroyed the sea ice. An EPIC storm did…not Global Warming

The sea surface temperature anomaly around the entire Antarctic land mass is between 0.5 – 1.5 below the long term average. Hardly a convincing argument for global warming. Even in the Arctic Ocean there are significant pockets of cold water.
The problem with folks claiming that warmists, or watermelons, numbers are declining is that alarmists, akin to icebergs, are nearly always two thirds hidden. This is primarily what has made them so successful and invariably so dangerous.
I can’t trust their measuring methods. Like the temperature are they using the method of “homogenize” the older data and methods with the modern data and methods? Does this method create an artificially higher ice extent from 30 years ago and an artificial lowering of the ice extent now?
I have to rely on when the ice melts and arrives. It appears to be melting latter in the year and starting to freeze sooner these last few years. This is more important to me than their, IMHO, biased measurements.

Assuming the minimum ice record was reached (which is questionable), the record is a fluke, largely related to an unusually intense, abnormally COLD blizzard that broke up much of the Arctic sea ice. So the alarmists are crowing about a cold event, not a warm event. Shows they are far more interested in spin than in science.
1950s and 1960s will rule the climate 1n the 2010s and 2020s

Who really knows…what I do know is that someone or lots of somones with college degrees are making a living off of this…regardless of the side they are on. When a simple well paid tradesman could be sent to take the same measurements with his TOTAL STATION and record it without all this scientific argument…. just the numbers.
The fact is that even the most simple forces in nature are not controlled by man or a god…but rather whom may warn of the effects of living to close to the river or on an island in the Caribbean.
Really does it matter to speculate on what IF? I mean money is one of the newest things on earth and entirely a creation of mankind.
I have listened to some wierdos that believe the earth was only created 4,000 years ago. That humans were created by god or genetically engineered from existing species by a superior being to use as slaves for the mining of gold.
