The first wide scale effort to address siting issues, Watts, (2009), a collated photographic survey, showed that approximately 90% of USHCN stations were compromised by encroachment of urbanity in the form of heat sinks and sources, such as concrete, asphalt, air conditioning system heat exchangers, roadways, airport tarmac, and other issues. This finding was backed up by an August 2011 U.S. General Accounting Office investigation and report titled: Climate Monitoring: NOAA Can Improve Management of the U.S. Historical Climatology Network

It is true, even for the established stations. For instance BWI airport located a few miles south of Baltimore is in an area that had a ton of houses go up in the last 30-40 years. They no longer use downtown Baltimore because they used to take the temperature at the custom’s house…at a station located on the black roof of a tall building which sometimes gave temperatures over 110.
In addition, the ASOS instrumentation change in the mid 90s that all the main US stations went through for some reason causes NOAA to “adjust” the raw data downward for older years because of a “bias” in temperatures. Its a thermometer, how much bias can there be?
For instance Jan. 1977 was the coldest on record in Baltimore. Raw data is 22.9F average, just the arithmetic mean of highs and lows for the month as anyone with common sense and a grade school education knows how to do. But when they use “adjusted” data to calculate normals, like the 1971-2000 normals they were using before, they used 21.2F! Obviously understating the normals will cause new data to seem “warmer” by comparison. Right now with the 1981-2010 normals being used the difference between the “adjusted” data and the raw arithmetic is 0.5-1.0F, it was more for 1971-2000 normals. It won’t “catch up” until we are using 2001-2030 normals, by which time they’ll find another “bias.”
Go ahead, try your local station or look at BWI which has all its historical montly data available. I checked several stations and found the same thing. The local station contact couldn’t explain the adjustment, and I got no response when I emailed the NCDC.

What a great video. And I’ve been following the urban heat island effect on temperatures because of this site, Robert. I have been trying to educate an old girl friend of mine about the non-issue of human-caused global warming/climate change. She send me an email telling me that it’s all the big oil companies who are destroying the climate and Earth, period. And to never email her again. So sad. I used to consider her one of the most logical women that I knew. But then, I should have known better. She voted for Obama … and is still on his band wagon.
The nazis had their own environmental agenda, not as extreme as the one we have today though.
I love how those that adhere to the agw faith will spout on endlessly about urban heat islands, and how deforestation and asphault are changing the enviroment, but when you try to say “That urban heat island and all that asphault is affecting the reporting station that your basing your religion on. Its corrupting the data” they attack you with a vitriol seldom seen in higher primates.
And the other half came from the Grand Solar Maximum which officially ended in 2009. The Grand Solar Minimum has begun, which for decades will be characterized by crop failures and fuel shortages caused by record cold. The warmth we have been enjoying will become a distant memory.

What does the PE stand for??? Just returned from a wonderful trip to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons where we took my oldest granddaugter. Saw alot of dead crops in the midwest and even some in the west. Everywhere we went it was hot, hot, hot except for the mountains!!! So what else is new in August?? My point is I don’t think we have to worry about crop failures due to cold. Maybe fuel shortages due to the embecile in the white house and burning our food for fuel, but not to cold temperatures…
