One of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes

Last Thursday researchers at the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) found that El Misti had recently recorded the highest amount of seismic activity than in the past five years.

El Misti is located about 10 miles (17 km) from the city of Arequipa, Peru’s second largest city, which has a population of 1.2 million people.

According to the USGS, El Misti’s proximity to Arequipa – as well its history of explosive eruptions – make it one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes.

Engineer Orlando Macedo told El Comercio that a swarm of 224 earthquakes were registered at El Misti, which signaled that the volcano was no longer dormant.

Despite the recent increase in activity, the IGP said there were still no conditions for an eruption to occur at El Misti, which last erupted sometime between 1450 and 1470.

According to the USGS, the modern symmetrical cone “formed between about 13,700 and 11,300 years ago,” (meaning that its formation may correspond to the Gothenburg magnetic reversal).

The last major eruption of El Misti took place about 2000-2300 years ago. It deposited a pumice layer some 12 inches (30 cm) thick at 7.8 miles (13 km) distance from the volcano and extends 15 miles (25 km) SW.

A similar event today would be a major hazard for the city of Arequipa.

Peruvian authorities said the volcano has been relatively dormant for nearly five centuries, while volcano expert John Search says  “there were 5 minor eruptions of El Misti Volcano in 20th Century.”

scary crazy how many human settlements of size are built close, near or on volcanoes.
you would think mankind would have wised up by now.

People all over the world live in places they shouldn’t, I live here in New Orleans. People live in flood prone protected areas, volcanic prone areas, earthquake prone areas, tornado prone areas, and very cold prone areas. Where in the world is it truely safe if what is predicted by robert comes? We are all going to be in a one for all, all for me situation.
Be as prepared as you can to go wherever the best place in your area is as fast as you can because where you are may not be as safe as you may have thought. :)
p.s- The new levees held fine this time but areas that didn’t get flooded in katrina got flooded this time. It just depends what comes and where.
