Although the locals observed wild animals descending from the mountains as well as burnt vegetation, and although they claim to have felt the ground shaking and heard unusual rumblings from the volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) says it has allayed their fears.
Phivolcs chief Renato U. Solidum, Jr. said in a letter sent to Mayor Reynaldo S. Tamayo on Friday that the observations of smoke and fire coming out of the crater were non-volcanic in nature.
“Maybe someone can explain to me how fire and smoke coming out of a volcano’s crater are “non-volcanic in nature.”
“Ocular inspections at the crater area and seismic records showed that there were no volcanic activities, specifically an imminent eruption, in Mt. Matutum,” said Mr. Solidum.
Mt. Matutum’s last recorded eruption was in 1911 according to Phivolcs records.

I would guess a lot of lush growth and a lightning strike or someone burning off as they do a lot in the PPines..would be one easy expl;anaton,
the animals moving down? could be due to humans and smoke.

I think they’re totally wrong !! It’s ridiculous to say that there is nothing to worry about. We had a recent eruption in New Zealand which was “totally unexpected” LOL

Oh, come on – they climbed up and found a bunch of scouts camped out there making smokey fires and cooking dinner! And the animals left because there is no more annoying group of animals than a group of scouts on a campout. Had nothing to do with a volcano, no, not in any way. Anybody need a good bridge? got some for sale.
