Temperatures dropped to as low as -10C along the ranges last night, and even regions only a few kilometres from the coastline saw the mercury dip below zero.

Parkes, in the central west of the state, recorded its lowest August temperature in 12 years with -5C, while Glen Innes Airport was under -5C for the tenth consecutive night – dropping to -10C throughout the night.

Sydney’s lowest came in Katoomba (-2C) and Richmond (-1C).

“The coastal fringe of the state fared a little warmer but Sydney still shivered down to 6.8C with a 30km/h wind making it feel more like 1C,” said the Weather Channel’s senior meteorologist Tom Saunders.

“The freezing overnight minimum temperatures were a few degrees off all-time records, due to the perfect combination of light winds and clear skies which quickly developed behind a passing front.”

It will be another cold night again tonight through inland New South Wales, with temperatures forecast to plummet below zero.

I remember one of the nastiest frosts ever, that decimated trees and came right up onto peoples porches 3ft above ground level and iced up everything it touched, was in late september ,about 7? years back in sth aus, lower north, still the single most brutally cold night I remember ever.I had never seen a horse shivering with cold till that night. lots of lambs etc were lost.
