Spectacular photos of molten rock spewing down its sides and ash rising 2.5 miles into the sky.

Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano – 84 miles south east of the Ecuadorian capital Quito – has been spewing molten rock, ash and lava down its slopes since the weekend.

Noise from the eruptions was heard in the city of Riobamba, a 54 mile drive away.

Mercedes Taipe of Ecuador’s Geophysics Institute said that a half-dozen villages are being showered in volcanic ash, but that it is not yet known how much local farmers’ outputs will be affected.

In 1999, 15,000 Banos residents had to leave their homes and were unable to return for a year in the wake of a major eruption.

Amazing how the most beautiful things are often times the most dangerous.
