Crop damage before they are fully grown and ready to harvest. I’ve lost many a pumpkin to an early frost in Idaho.

  2. Mr Lost says:

How common in August is this for down there?

  3. Mr Lost says:

To me this seems it could happen in Late September but they are a mountain climate so I wonder what the records are for August in low temps.

I see! That is why the Canadian Geese have been flocking early in Sonoma County, California.
For the past 2-3 weeks I have seen large crowds of the geese feeding in several fields. They are about 2 months early this year, but this may explain why they are here so early. Normally, the geese land in short grass fields, but the farmers have not cut the grass for some time. It’s strange to see just the heads of the guards that keep watch while the rest feed.
Looks like we may be in for some nasty weather this winter.

I found a farming website that gives the avg first frost dates in Oregon. NOT Freeze..but frost.

As you can see…most of the places..even in the mountains don’t get their first frost until Sept 1-10th on avg

Well, I randomly chose one of the cities listed in the warning above and here are the stats for August 23rd from Weather.com

    Avg High 83
    Avg Low 43
    Record High 94 (1982)
    Record Low 28 (1960)

So assuming the temperature gets down to 28 – 32 like stated above, that would be close to or tied with the record low from 1960 if it makes 28. So it sounds like it’s unusual, but not unprecedented.

I wish the Global Warming would hurry up and get here.

These are mountain communites. Gilchrist is almost 5000 ft. It’s at base of ski mountains. Not really unheard of to have frost anytime. There is no really no agriculture outside of trees and the few hay fields. We have had a cool summer in Oregon and farmers will reap the benifits of have a good crop to sell during drought times

  9. Ken says:

Some areas in the northwest were still getting snow fall 8 weeks ago. Wow,,,, Short summer season in a few areas!
