More than 95 earthquakes so far today.

“There has been more and more activity in the past few days on the small island of el Hierro, part of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off North Africa,” says reader Hans Schreuder.

According to a Canary Island newspaper report (translated), the land has actually moved. “Between 13 and 16 September there has been a horizontal displacement of 1.62cm in a northerly direction and 2.9cm in elevation.”

Piers Corbyn is expecting more world-side seismic activity in the days ahead:

  1. Postman1 says:

Is this the part of the Canaries where geologists say a giant landslide may occur and send tsunamis onto the US east coast?

  2. johan says:

no that will be at la palma

    • Yes Johan, you are also right, but IMHO it will be el Hierro that will go first, due to the instability of the remaining rocks that now form the ridge from the valley of La Frontera to the west coast. That valley was formed some 50,00 years ago. All of the Canary Islands is of course volcanic so anyhting could happen at any time.

  3. Yes Postman1, it’s the very island that shed a huge slice of itself some 50,000 years ago. In time to come, another slice will slide into the Atlantic, but we have no way yet of knowing the timing of such an event.
