Volcanic ash from Indonesia’s increasingly active Anak Krakatau has reached a number of areas in Lampung, prompting a health warning from officials advising residents to wear masks when going outdoors or driving motorcycles.

“We also advise fishermen and tourists not to come within a radius of 3 kilometers of Anak Krakatau. The thick plumes of smoke sent off by Krakatau contain toxic material that is hazardous for your health,” said Andi Suhardi, head of the Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargo Pancuran village.

“It is rather unusual for the dust to be this thick,” said Juniardi, a resident of Bandarlampung who complained that the falling dust was hampering visibility.

According to the volcanology office in Bandung, activities at Anak Krakatau have been on the rise over the past few days, reaching almost 90 eruptions per day and spewing red hot lava up to 1,000 feet (300 m) above its peak.

“More than 100 volcanic quakes and tremors have been recorded,” said Nurhuda, who heads the observation and information section of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Lampung.

Anak Krakatau (child or Krakatau) was created by the same tectonic forces that led to the 1883 Krakatoa eruption that killed tens of thousands of people.

7 Responses to Krakatau activity increases

  1. Argiris Diamantis says:

For each volcano that shows signs of activity, the chance this will lead to a major eruption in a short while, is rather small. But when a lot of volcanoes all over the world are showing signs of activity, it is unavoidable that at least one of them will have a major eruption. Piers Corbyn says that lower solar activity will enhance earth quakes and volcanic activity. So in the second half of the present solar cycle 24 and during the next solar cycle 25, it is very likely that we will see some major volcanic eruptions. It is a writing on the wall that already some of the most dangerous volcanoes like Bezymianny and Krakatau are showing strong signs of activity.

    • Andriy says:

That is clear that volcanic activity will lead finally to ice age. But what the number of erupted volcanoes will trigger the situation?

  2. Theo says:

Makes absolutely sense what Piers Corbyn says!
This is a mother of a volcano and will definitely have an effect on the temperatures and with all the other erruptions currently, and with the sun’s low cycle, we could have a temperature decline exponentially.

    • Beano says:

Krakatau had much less an effect on the global weather than Tambora 1815.
All bang and little ejecta compared to Tambora.
Having said that Krakatau is a suspect in the major 5th century climate chaos. Also a suspect for the 13th century.(at least one volcanologist who has studied Krakatau extensively told me this)

  3. laurel says:

will take mainstream media days to pick up on this one..funny how slow they are on the real big natural events as opposed to some 4hrs greenland melt.

  4. Bob Knows says:

Letting off small eruptions relieves pressure and will prevent a massive explosive eruption as has happened before.
