“The statement that it is warmer now than it has been for thousands of years is untrue.”

“The warming we have seen in the late-20th century is not unprecedented,” says reader Steve Foster. “There was another peak  temperature between 950-1050 AD. However, many people still believe there are not CYCLES.”

A new paper looking at the climate of the past two thousand years, published in the journal “Climate of the Past,” shows that temperatures during the Medieval Warm Period were higher than today’s temperatures.

“This new analysis shows that the warming we have seen in the late-20th century is not unprecedented, as can be seen in figure 1,” writes David Whitehouse. “Seen in the reconstruction is a well-defined peak of temperature between 950–1050 AD. They also find that the first millennium is warmer than the second.

Note how incredibly quickly the temperatures plummeted after that brief period of warming. I fear that the same thing could be happening now, because that period corresponded with the Oort Minimum, a time of very low sunspot activity. (See also: http://iceagenow.info/2012/07/ice-age-began-bang/ )

Sunspot Grand Minima

“This impressive piece of research makes a significant contribution to a growing body of evidence that both the global extent of the MWP, and the temperature was similar, or even greater than the Current Warm Period, even though the atmospheric CO2 concentrations today are some 40% greater than they were during the MWP.

“Some argue that without anthropogenic greenhouse gasses the world would have cooled in the past few decades. That might be the case, but the statement that it is warmer now than it has been for thousands of years is untrue. The rate of warming seen recently is also not unprecedented.

“In the context of climate sensitivity – the real world climatic reaction to increasing greenhouse gasses – and climate model uncertainty, it is an interesting question to ask: if Nature alone in the past can produce temperatures like those we see today, why can’t she do so again?

Entitled “The extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere temperature in the last two millennia: reconstructions of low-frequency variability,” by B Christiansen of the Danish Meteorological Institute and F C Ljungqvist of Stockholm University, the paper concludes that previous climate reconstructions “seriously underestimate” variability and trends in the climate record of the past two millennia.

“Researchers in this paper compile an impressive number of temperature proxies situated in the extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere,” says Whitehouse. “There are 91 in total, comprising ice-cores, tree-rings (density and width), lake and sea sediments, historical records, speleotherms, and pollen. All of them go back to 1500 AD and 32 go back as far as 1 AD.”

6 Responses to Climate was warmer 1000 years ago than now

  1. Rosco says:

11,000 years ago the Earth’s axis of rotation was such that at Perihelion the Northern Hemisphere was in summer – today it is winter. This obviously means that 11,000 years ago Northern Hemisphere summers were most likely warmer than today and winters cooler.

Today the maximum solar radiation impinging on Earth is over the huge expanses of the tropical and subtropical Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans in the southern hemisphere while the minimum impinges over the land masses in the Northern Hemisphere.

Switching these around with a continual variance MUST affect climate and all the caterwauling of the climate “scientists” about there being no effect from the Sun is just complete BS even a child could see through if they weren’t brainwashed by a shameless Academia !

Ever noticed how the Big Bang is ALWAYS a theory while the Greenhouse is an effect ? Yet the observational evidence for the “theory” is far more compelling than any evidence for the “effect” !!

    • Dennis says:

To shine even more light on the sad state of modern “science”, there’s even more observed evidence discrediting the big bang than AGW.

      • Rosco says:

AGW is TOTALLY discredited by the observed fact that the any planet with an atmosphere which equals or exceeds 1 Bar pressure has a temperature at 1 Bar pressure which significantly exceeds the Blackbody temperature calculated by radience alone – and most achieve this with an atmosphere which has no “greenhouse” gases at all.

Further the planets where this effect is most pronounced receive almost no solar radiation to initiate any surface heating.

This demolishes any possibility of any “greenhouse” effect.

  2. qf says:

Well the bigbang is also just a theory..and on climate its the SUN only. Only two possible energy source can change the atmosphere sun and some extent (unknown) than ocean heat from earth interior.

    • Butch Young says:

I agree about the Sun and forces on Earth, but…. “Just a theory?” Well that’s all it has to be,the defination of “theory,”is too often mistaken as an “excuse made to tell an angry wife where you’ve been all night…” Most people confuse “theory” with “hypothesis.” The “hypothesis” is the quick summation of events,UNTIL the theory can be formed. Its just a theory that your car will start, gravity is “just a theory” as well.

  3. Craig Read says:

Globaloneywarming – any ‘activist cum scientist’ who denies the reality of massive temp fluctuations in the medieval era – including both a warming and cooling – is simply a fool, a charlatan and a non-scientific cad. It discredits the entire cult of warm movement.
