“The full story is not explained in the MSM articles,” said reader Dave. “At the time a scientist or two predicted the earthquake. The ones that were jailed said there was nothing to worry about thus MAKING A PREDICTION. I think it was in a previous post on this site that explained this. Good riddance to bad scientists.”

The story reads consistently with I’ve read before,  that they are being prosecuted for not predicting the earthquake,” says a different reader, Yonaton Hyland.

“However, I just read over at  WUWT, that it may not have been for not predicting it, but for predicting that there was nothing to worry about,” says Yonaton.

“In the words of Roger Pielke Jr., …

“The deputy chief and scientists held a short one-hour meeting and then a press conference, during which they downplayed the possibility of an earthquake. For instance, De Bernardinis went so far as to claim that the recent tremors actually reduced earthquake risks: “]he scientific community continues to confirm to me that in fact it is a favourable situation, that is to say a continuous discharge of energy.”

When asked directly by the media if the public should sit back and enjoy a glass of wine rather than worry about earthquakes, De Bernardinis acted as sommelier: “Absolutely, absolutely a Montepulciano doc. This seems important.”

“That is a totally different matter.  Perhaps that was their undoing?”

Roger Pielke, Jr. is the former director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy Research at the University of Colorado (2001-2007). He has been on the faculty of the University of Colorado since 2001 and is a professor in the Environmental Studies Program and a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES).

14 Responses to Conviction of Italian geologists more complicated than it seems

  1. Italian toads predicted L’Aquila earthquake. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/31/quake_detecting_toads.
ALL quakes stronger than 5 richter ALERT through precursor phenomena as: http://motoji-ikeya.jpn.cx/quakesandpets/index.html.
    Bernardinis’ stupid comment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLIMHe0NnW8

  2. yonaton hyland says:

Also, please note the other complications that Dr. Pielke mentions, among which is that the courts haven’t (yet?) held responsible those who built the buildings that couldn’t withstand the tremors.

While the scientists may not have acted properly, it still looks like there is plenty of blame to go around.

  3. Theo says:

Convict then those in the US that predicted global warming and with a hidden agenda to make money out of it!!

  4. andrew dunbar says:

I disagree that its complicated at all.
scientists based in a field with little or no predictive capabilities should not be held accountable for any thing that happens their after any such event.

they are basing their predictions on very basic understanding of tectonic forces. forces and pressures they cannot even measure until after the event.

Until such a time as the science is settled on geology might i suggest any and all geologists in italy catch the next train out of the country. they are sliding back into the medieval era as fast as they possibly can.

For me personally this is a sure sign society is going to collapse especially europe. Im just glad we have the english channel to stop the horde

  5. Laurel says:

during a discussion on the ABC national using a chap from the NZ geo crowd- it IS a dilemma, if they announce risk and are wrong, they get sued( loss of business panic etc) or ignored.
    if they dont..well, people die.
and many quakes hit out of the blue anyway.
    really hard call.

  6. tomd says:

This news puts a whole new perspective on the issue !!

  7. George Thompson says:

If this conviction is allowed to stand, then the cells next to theirs should be filled with those who promote the global warming hoax.

  8. Richard D says:

The idea of holding public officials responsible for their actions, or inactions, by sending them to jail is ridiculous and impractical. We would have to build too many prisons.

The Red Queen had a better idea: “Off with their heads!”

  9. TC says:

This sounds similar to what happened in St Pierre, Martinique before the volcano discharged a cloud of ash that roared into town and killed 30,000 people. Some were warning that the situation was grave and begged everyone to evacuate, but the mayor and powerful business interests who had something to lose told everyone that there was nothing to worry about. The cloud also burned all the ships anchored in the bay.The only human to survive was a prisoner in the dungeon.

You obviously haven’t been to London recently.

  11. David Spurgeon says:

“Convict then those in the US that predicted global warming and with a hidden agenda to make money out of it!!” – says it all really!

  12. Ganavion says:

The Italian “Protezione Civile” (Civil Protection) was doing a very good job at those times, and political opposition needed to denigrate it, in order to denigrate the Government. That’s why they were intercepting Guido Bertolaso, the chief of Civil Protection in Italy. Who paid this ? Why our money wasn’t used to intercept, instead, mafia and camorra ? Why our money was used for political wars ? Thus, they used the words of Bertolaso, distorting the sense, to denigrate a Civil Protection that was the proud of our Nation. The question isn’t about science, it is a political war. imho

  13. Gail says:

Al Gore, stay out of Italy or you may share a similar fate!!!
