Barely mentions the 2 to 5 feet of snow on the way for Oregon and California mountains.

“Some areas (of the U.S.) were expecting up to a foot of snow by day’s end,” says the first sentence in the NBC story.

You have read through the entire 13-paragraph article – to the very last sentence –  before you learn that several feet of snow are expected in the higher elevations of California and Oregon this weekend.

“The NWS (National Weather Service) said several inches of rain along with several feet of snow in elevated areas were expected in California and Oregon this weekend,” the article concludes.

Is this a sneaky way to hide the full extent of the amount of snow? I can’t say. But the fact is that, according to the NWS, some areas will receive up to five feet of snow by Sunday night.

Here are some of those warnings:

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings Saturday for parts of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York and Ohio on the East Coast and also parts of Northern California and Oregon on the West Coast.

4 Responses to NBC downplays snowfall forecast

  1. Theo says:

I also see on Sky News, just after their world weather report, they talk about the melting ice in the Arctic? Are these people dummys?
They also cleverly only show the max temperatures.

  2. We, here in California, want a deep snow pack in the Sierras. We haven’t had it for a while. We depend upon it to feed our resevoirs for the cities’ water, as well as the irrigation water for the farms in the Central Valley. Back in the 80′s, when I was living in Sacramento, I can remember the snow pack in the mountains being 15 to 20 feet, or more. That’s a good thing and it’s not at all unusual. We need that again.

  3. John---Bonanza says:

    Hello Robert.
I live in the southern oregon area where this storm is happening. It is quiet right now. Here is an updated weather warning forcast for Blizzard conditions But like I say it is calm right now?

    Blizzard Warning, Winter Storm Warning
Statement as of 9:17 AM PST on December 23, 2012

… Blizzard Warning in effect until 10 PM PST this evening…
… Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST this
    evening…

The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Blizzard
Warning… which is in effect until 10 PM PST this evening. A
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST this
    evening.

    * Snow accumulations… 4 to 6 inches of snow through this
evening except 6 to 12 inches over the mountains.

    * Timing… snow will be heaviest and winds will be strongest
through this afternoon. But snow and gusty winds will continue
    through this evening.

    * Locations include: Lakeview… Beatty… Chemult… Crescent…
    Gilchrist… Sprague River.

    * Winds: south 25 to 35 with gusts to 55 mph are expected. Winds
will be strongest this afternoon near Summer Lake and Silver
Lake. Gusty winds combined with periods of heavy snow will
create blizzard conditions with visibility of less than one quarter
    mile.

    * Impacts… snow will create hazardous driving conditions on
area roads and highways including Highway 66… Highway 97…
    Highway 140… Highway 70… Highway 31… Highway 395 and
    Warner Mountain Summit.

    * For a detailed view of the hazard area… visit
    http://www.Wrh.NOAA.Gov/wrh/whv/?Wfo=mfr

    Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of
snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. If you must
travel… keep an extra flashlight… food… and water in your
vehicle in case of an emergency.

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions… making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If
you must travel… have a winter survival kit with you. If you get
    stranded… stay with your vehicle.

  4. Phillip says:

For myself I never watch abc, cbs, nbc, cnn or even the weather channel or any of that seudo- science junk. To me they have sold their souls for money and will have to deal with their choices later. I watch the weather satatlites and other weather forcasting web sites and I make my own predictions and I am accurate 95% of the time.
