Of course the original headline called it a “cold snap.”

Plunging temperatures across California threaten the state’s lucrative citrus harvest, its winter vegetables and its more cold-sensitive strawberry crop, weather and agricultural experts said on Friday.

With temperatures throughout the state falling by as much as 20F (11C) below normal on Thursday and Friday, it remains unclear how much of the state’s $2 billion-a-year citrus industry, which provides most of the oranges and lemons commercially available to U.S. consumers, might be lost.

What have I been saying about fighting in the streets for food?

36F in San Fran bay area this am. Had frost all over the car at 0600. Lived here for 10 years(when I am not deployed overeas) never seen frost on my car before.

  2. Rhys Jaggar says:

It would appear that they won’t loss all the crop as some is already harvested and precautions can be taken.

I guess the warm weather in Florida will ensure that the other great citrus producing state isn’t unduly affected……..

  3. Caroline in Central West Virginia says:

And the cold is intensifying.. waves of cold are hammering from west to east right now.

The Pacific Ocean is the largest water area on earth.NASA states there are approx. 3,000,000 under sea volcanos on earth ! Do you think some are venting occasionally..I just returned from Mommoth Mtn. And can verify the low temps of -4 degrees. The top of the ski Mtn.was devoid of skiers due to the wind chill of -12 degrees. I have skied this Mtn since 1972 and this season the snow is very lite, not wet..fighton G.

Frost has always been a part of citrus farmers’ lives in central CA. They used to burn “smudge pots”, but now the windmills are going. Vegetable farmers covered early crops with paper white caps, but now use sheets of plastic. Weather predictions for my town, last night, varied. 6. Dfyg4ce says:

It has been at or below freezing Each night Since about the 1st of the month. (JAN) of course the past three nights have dipped into the mid to high 20′s. This is in Redlands Ca. an area of California that produces a lot of citrus, Oranges and Lemons mostly.

  7. Toni says:

East of the Cascades in Wa state, about 20 miles N of the Columbia river, we’re 4 degrees. Many individual record rains, colds for the last several years running.

Worse than that is the steady decline over the last half dozen years or so is for gardeners. Not enough consecutive frost free days for many crops such as tomatoes, all squash etc. Want to garden here? Build a nice wind proof greenhouse.

In Western Wa, longer spring/fall with less sunny summers, so most crops rot or mold in the field.

    Safe Journey
