“CHASING ICE” captures largest glacier calving ever filmed
On May 28, 2008, Adam LeWinter and Director Jeff Orlowski filmed a historic breakup at the Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland. The calving event lasted for 75 minutes and the glacier retreated a full mile across a calving face three miles wide. The height of the ice is about 3,000 feet, 300-400 feet above water and the rest below water.

This certainly is suggestive of a confined space being able to warm better than the open sea, but I don’t think that this is suggestive of ocean warming, although it would be nice to know if there are some type of thermal vents in that inlet. don’t know how you would go about checking for them, though.
Greenlands icecover monitors by DMI. And they have a site where You can study hove snow turns into glacier ice. There you can see a mass balance that explains ice drifting to the ocean as a major part of the mass balance.

Most glaciers are growing, and the growing of glaciers takes place in a steady, far less spectacular process, in the winter when it’s dark and extremely cold at the poles. Images like in this video are often used as “proof” of global warming a.k.a. climate change. The real cause of calving glaciers is warm ocean currents. So in one place you can wait for this to happen, and in most other places nothing at all happens. But that is never mentioned.
Seems to me this “calving” was expected! the guy just wanted propaganda film to say things are melting and seeking more free grant money to travel on tax payers. I think this is a yearly event as the water was moving fairly fast. In glacier calving the water is not fast flowing. People in Alaska wait for the Yukon river to thaw and start moving, seems this film is on that type of event and could have been any where.
Looking on his “Retreated in 10 years” map, it obviously was retreating rapidly about 2000, and has greatly slowed down to where in 2010 it hardly retreated at all. Extrapolating from HIS rate of change data it would be expected to stop retreating in 2011, and start growing by 2012 or soon thereafter. In the center of the glacier it either didn’t retreat after 2004, or it retreated a little more but has already increased back to the 2004 location. If anything this map is consistent with the naturally occurring “Little Ice Age” cycle that peaked warm in about 2000. Not evidence supporting ongoing warming at all.
About 98% of the USA population, and probably most in the world, cannot relate to ‘bigger than Manhattan’ because they have never been there! Much less driven by or toured the Empire State Building. You need to develop a better understanding of how to relate this terrific imagery to most people’s perspective. For example, I want you to relate the calving size to Mt. Hood, Oregon. Can you do it?

A Manhattan-sized calving event speaks to a rising Arctic Ocean temperature. However. Undersea venting seems a more plausible explanation than a mini-microscopic change in atmospheric CO2 level. Why the increased European snowfall? It’s colder. I watch few movies, nothing with anyone I think is a fool (male or female, that includes most of ‘em); ABC has been worthless since Viet Nam, NBC is becoming worthless, CBS is less and less watchable. In the final analysis, I watch movies of interest a few years past the media-hype, read the WSJ (those guys go to jail if they lie and the markets don’t lie ever) and watch global temp patterns myself while the mainstream media ignores Spring blizzards and Antarctic temps in the minus range all their Summer.
