“This is a significant event which is expected to persist through until Friday morning,” MetService said in a severe weather warning at 9.42am.

South Island residents are getting ready for it.

Freezing conditions were expected in much of both islands, bringing snow, rain and gale force winds to many areas.

Heavy snow was expected about Canterbury and southern parts of Marlborough above 300m. Snow was also expected to low levels about Southland and southern Fiordland. Snow was expected about Banks Peninsula.

“A very strong and cold southerly flow spreads over the South Island tonight, with snow expected to lower to near sea level about southern and eastern areas,” MetService said.

Accumulations of snow were likely to exceed 50cm above 300m, and 100cm above 500m. Smaller amounts of snow were expected below 300m.

“People should be aware that snowfalls are likely to cause widespread disruption to traffic, especially about alpine passes and higher level roads.”

Below 300m, 60-90mm of rain was expected during the period, including for Christchurch City, with 10 to 20cm of snow likely above 200m.

“Severe wind chill will stress livestock,” MetService said.

The warning has prompted Canterbury Civil Defence to urge residents to check their emergency supplies are fully stocked.

“Everyone should have the necessities in place to be able to be self-sufficient for three days or more in the event of road closures and power cuts,” Regional Civil Defence group controller Neville Reilly said.

“This includes having stocks of food, water, warm clothing, fuel, alternative lighting and other emergency supplies on hand.

“This spring wasn’t just seasonable. At some points, it was downright wintry!” That’s the best line in the article, says reader Ralph Fato.

“Preliminary rankings show this spring was the 7th coldest and 50th driest on record for North Carolina,” says the State Climate Office of North Carolina. “That includes a March that was actually colder than January for many locations across the state.”

“This spring wasn’t just seasonable. At some points, it was downright wintry! In early April, a storm brought snow and ice to the mountains and sleet as far east as Clayton. And in May, we saw a few daily low temperature records broken, including a chilly 39° morning in Raleigh last month.

“Another rarity this spring was the lack of 90°+ days. On average, Raleigh’s first 90° day is May 11th, but this year, the capital city didn’t reach that milestone until June 12th.

“What caused our cooler springtime conditions? In early March, the Arctic Oscillation (AO) plummeted to extreme negative values, and as a whole the month of March 2013 recorded the most negative AO value since December 2009, and the 5th-most negative AO value observed in any month since 1950!”

Thanks to Kenneth Lund for this link

“I thought we were told 13 years ago that kids wouldn’t know what snow is in winter anymore,” says Kenneth. ”Mind you, this is summer.”

“Shows you just how miserably their agenda has failed. Everything they predicted was completely false. They should have thrown ALL of their warming models right in the city trash can and burned it a decade ago. Because that’s where they belong……. “

Summer ended abruptly in the Siberian town of Nadym on Friday (June 14) as heavy snow blanketed the streets after days of hot tropical weather.

Shocked Russians took it to social media websites to post videos and express their surprise, as just a day ago the temperatures reached +30 Celsius in Nadym.

People in Siberia are well used to living in snow, but not in June.

Nadym residents tweeted photos of themselves in shorts and sunglasses, which they donned preparing for a long hot summer, seating amid piles of snow.

Snow continued to fall throughout the day covering streets, cars, parks and an airport with a thick layer.

Thanks to Argiris Diamantis in the Netherlands for this link
“Some mainstream media in the Netherlands picked up this news item about snowfall in Nadym, Siberia, at the end of the astronomical spring (already the meteorological summer),” says Argiris. “They consider this weird news rather than climate change news.”

“This kind of weather will not be so weird in the coming years as the new little Ice Age is starting.”
